Water Quality

The responsibility for the quality of water within the UK lies with the Environment Agency. It is up to them to ensure the quality level is maintained and improved. For more information on water pollution click here.

The Water Framework Directive came into force in December 2000. It requires all inland and coastal waters to reach a required standard by 2015. The implementation work is undertaken by the competent authorities; the Environment Agency in England and Wales, The Scottish Environment Protection Agency and The Environment and Hertitage Service in Northern Ireland.

Waste

Waste is constantly produced by industries and individuals alike. In England and Wales the total amount of waste amounts to over 100million tonnes per annum and is currently increasing by around 3% a year. In 2004/05 English households recycled only 23% of their waste, one of the lowest rates in Europe. The Government hope to increase this to 25% by 2005/06. (DEFRA, 2006).  For more information about waste and recyling please click here.
